What is an LVDT?

The letters LVDT is an abbreviation for Linear Variable Differential Transformer , a common type of electromechanical transducer that the rectilinear motion of an object on the it can convert mechanically coupled to a corresponding electrical signal. LVDT linear position sensors are readily available, the movements as small as a few millionths of an inch measured up to several centimeters, but also for the measurement of positions up to ± 20 mm (± 0.5 m).

The transformer’s internal structure consists of a primary winding between a pair of identically wound secondary windings, symmetrically centered around the primary spacing. The coils are encapsulated in a one-piece hollow form of thermally stable glass fiber reinforced polymers to moisture, in a high permeability magnetic shield wrapped wrapped and then secured in a cylindrical stainless steel housing. This coil assembly is usually the stationary element of the position sensor.

The movable element of an LVDT is a separate tubular armature of magnetically permeable material called the core, which is free to move axially within the coil hollow bore and is coupled mechanically to the object whose position is measured. This hole is usually large enough to provide substantial radial clearance between the core and bore, with no physical contact between him and the coil.

In operation, the LVDT primary coil is energized by alternating current of appropriate amplitude and frequency as the primary excitation is known. The LVDT output the electrical signal is the differential AC voltage between the two secondary windings, which varies with the axial position of the core in the LVDT coil. Usually AC output voltage is set by suitable electronic circuits at a high level DC voltage or current that is converted more convenient to use.
