There is a large body of research on shape memory polymers out there. The basis is that an energy source such a heat or light affects a predesigned polymer shape. As that source is removed or introduced, the polymer resumes its former state. While making your own takes some expertise, I have listed an experiment as a source that utilizes a form of shape memory polymer.
