Question–: Spot test to differentiate BHT from Irganox 565?
I am looking for a simple spot test that will give a positive result for BHT down to, say 400 ppm in a polymer, but a negative result for Irganox 565.

Most of the products we make use BHT as the antioxidant, but one uses the irganox, and it cannot have more than 40 ppm BHT. I am looking for a way to differentiate the two products when they are in unlabeled boxes (without having to send them to the lab for their quantitative BHT analysis).
I had figured that there is probably something that could detect the sulfur in the irganox, but I need to be able to see the absence of BHT, not the presence of irganox (since the twilight has both).

Wow — a real question. I’m sorry I have looked up stuff on chemical abstracts and I just cannot find anything that meets your criteria. BHT is the less functional compound by far. It would seem easier to spot for the irganox.

There is no structural feature in BHT that is not also in Irganox 565, so it will be impossible to get a postive for BHT and a negative for 565 by a simple chemical test. However, if your polymer sample is solvent extractable, you should be able to do a quick and dirty TLC using a UV sensitive plate. BHT will have a higher Rf than 565. HPLC would be very sensitive, if you have one handy, but you have already said you want to keep your lab out of it.

Hydrophilic head: phosphate group. Hydrophobic tail: hydrocarbon. It creates a bilayer in cells that serves as a semipermeable membrane that prevents bigger substances from entering the cell without a transport protein. It is a polymer because it is composed of different substances put together.
